Date: August 6th 2010

Greetings Everyone,

As the summer draws near, I'm sure you all are getting ready to come back to Gatorland and do this college thing again. Or maybe you are coming for the first time and are ready to plunge into all the exciting opportunities here at UF. Well, wait no longer for below are a few ways to become active in NSBE and even have a little fun.

1.    School Supply Drive

2.    Become a NSBE PCI Coach

3.    Renew your Membership ASAP

4.    Free Trip to University of Illinois

5.    Gator Launch STEM Career Mentoring Program

1.    School Supply Drive

As we know our NSBE Mission is "To increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and *positively impact the community*". This year at RLC (Regional Leadership Conference), the REB will be collecting School Supply Packages for a local school in Tennessee. Each chapter is asked to donate at least 4 supply packages to fulfill this T.O.R.C.H. Initiative.

Each Package should include (one of each):

BackPack

3 Ring 3" Binder

iPod Cover (for an iPod Touch)

Small Spiral Notebook

Pack of College Rule Loose Leaf Paper (100 ct)

Folder

Pack of Pencils (24 ct)

Pack of Ink Pens (10 ct)

Please let me know if you are able to assist with donating items for these
school supply packages. Most of these items are pretty cheap, especially
during the current back to school sales. You can contact me, LaToya Carter,
if you are able to assist with this regional TORCH initiative at
torch@ufnsbe.org or by phone. Please do so by this Friday afternoon, in
order for me to collect the items from you. Again, these items will be used
to positively impact a Tennessee school and will be collected at RLC on the
weekend of August 13th. I would greatly appreciate any items that you could
donate.

With all NSBE love,

LaToya S. Carter

In October 2010 for NSBE week, high school students will be participating in the Trimathelon. In order to make this a success, we need 16 coaches for each group of students. If you are interested please email Thashea Miles at pcichair@ufnsbe.org

Gator Launch is a professional development opportunity for underrepresented second and third-year students interested in exploring Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) careers.

Starting Fall 2010, Gator Launch participants will:

  • participate in monthly professional development seminars
  • meet with their career mentor every other month
  • job shadow a mentor in their career field of interest

The term “underrepresented” includes gender, economic status, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity and any other identities that are not well represented in STEM fields. For application instructions, click to www.crc.ufl.edu/GatorLaunch.                                                             & nbsp;

For questions email

In an effort to increase the diversity of its graduate student body, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is offering a no-obligation, expense-paid campus visit to promising engineering, physics and chemistry students who are preparing for graduate study.  The trip is sponsored by the Multi-Cultural Engineering Recruitment for Graduate Education (MERGE) program. This year's MERGE program will be held on Nov. 5 & 6, 2010 with travel on Nov. 4 & 7. Complete information on the MERGE program, including application instructions can be found on the website. http://engineering.illinois.edu/merge

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and be enrolled in (or have recently completed) an accredited curriculum in engineering, physics or chemistry.  Preference is given to students who are planning to enter graduate studies in 2011 and whose cultural background will contribute to the diversity of the graduate student body.

It is important to note that in order to take advantage of this opportunity, you must submit the application materials no later than October 8, 2010.

For additional information or late registration, call the MERGE program at the 217-265-4560 or e-mail merge@cen.uiuc.edu.

5.    Gator Launch STEM Career Mentoring Program

Also as part of NSBE week we will be hosting a barbecue.  If you wanna join the fun and help at the same time (serving food, drink, etc.) email Letticia Etti at socials@ufnsbe.org
