Greetings friends and family,

I would like to inform you about an exciting state-wide project that I along with (Rhodes Scholar/NFL player) Myron Rolle and (NCAA shot put champion) Garrett Johnson have created: “Emerging Scholars
Project.”

The Emerging Scholars Project is a FREE, one-day informational conference designed to empower students with the tools they need to compete for the nation’s most sought-after fellowships and
scholarships. We are committed to encouraging minority, first-generation and other under-represented students to apply for these opportunities. I believe exceptional and deserving students emerge from a diverse number of universities and backgrounds. Unfortunately, recipients of the most prestigious national fellowships and scholarships including, but not
limited to Rhodes, Marshall and Fulbright have been traditionally
drawn from a relatively small number of private universities. With the assistance of the Emerging Scholars Project, we hope to bridge the disparity and equip these students with the proper resources to
compete with their colleagues.

This Project will expose students to life-changing educational opportunities through a series of informative, stimulating and interactive seminars. The event will feature presentations by accomplished fellowship recipients and experienced college advisors. Each seminar is geared toward providing insight into the selection criteria and application process for these competitive programs. At
the conclusion of the conference, our goal is to ensure students leave feeling empowered, as well as armed with confidence and knowledge. We want students excited about applying and ultimately qualify as a candidate for these coveted fellowships and scholarships.

The inaugural Emerging Scholars Project will take place on Saturday, July 30, 2011 at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. We are targeting applicants entering their sophomore, junior or senior
year from schools within the Florida State University System, in addition to students attending an accredited, four-year institution in the state.

Please assist me in passing this along to any deserving student you know who would like to take part in this exciting program.

2. GRU SUMMER CAMP-NEED VOLUNTEERS !

A message from your BEC senator:

Hello all,

I have been working with GRU staff members and a small group of our fellow engineering Gator peers for the past few weeks to plan a program
that could be implemented into the City of Gainesville’s summer camps. We wanted a program that would get kids interested in learning about science,
technology, mathematics, engineering, and the arts. We have come up with a program called: Full S.T.E.A.M. Ahead. (S.T.E.A.M. stands for Science,
Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics; somewhat similar to our S.T.E.M. program). The process of planning and getting the activities
together is complete; however we need volunteers to help us with going to the camps, and doing the activities with the children.

The activities are very simple and very fun. I will email the activity pamphlets/ instructions that correspond to the activity for the day that you plan to volunteer. Volunteering for this program could be a great way to connect better with GRU or it could look great on your resume. We need
volunteers for 4 days out of each week; however, any available time you may have is very much appreciated. Please find specific details below:

• We will visit the camps every Monday-Thursday at 2:00pm- 3:30pm, starting on June 20th.

• The kids will be broken up into two age groups:
o Group 1—Grade K-2nd
o Group 2—Grade 3rd-5th

• Activity days:
     o Mondays—Science—need at least 6 volunteers
     o Tuesdays—Engineering—need at least 8 volunteers
     o Wednesdays—Technology—need at least 6 volunteers
     o Thursdays—Mathematics—need at least 6 volunteers

• Dates and Locations:
     o June 20th-June 23rd—Albert “Ray” Massey (Westside)—1001 NW 34th Street
     o June 27th-June 30th—Rosa B. Williams Recreation Center—524 NW 1st Street
     o July 11th-July 14th—Porter’s Community Center—512 SW 6th Avenue
     o July 18th-July 21st—Eastside Recreation Center—2841 E. University Avenue
     o July 25th—July 28th—Clarence R. Kelly Community Center (Northeast)—1701 NW 8th Avenue

• Other Fun Activities Planned:
o Tour to GRU—Monday, June 27th—8:00am-12:00pm (need about 5 volunteers)
o Trip to the Kennedy Space Center—Wednesday, June 29th (all day—still figuring out how many volunteers we will need---more info to come).

3. GATORMANIA

Gatormania, the University of Florida's largest welcoming event for first-year and returning students is scheduled to take place on Saturday, July 9, 2011 from 11am - 3pm at the Reitz Union North Lawn.

This outdoor carnival, now in its TENTH year, exposes approximately 1000 first-year and returning students to a host of opportunities that exist on campus in a fun and relaxed environment that features games, activities, food and prizes.

As always this years show will include an amazing fashion and talent show. Not to forget the social, academic, cultural and professional organizations that will be at Gatormania 2011.

We need volunteers to table during this event. Please contact our PR Chair Troy Brown at prchair@ufnsbe.org or me at secretary@ufnsbe.org if you are interested in tabling! This is a fun event always brings out large crowds so this would be a perfect opportunity to promote NSBE ! :)

Hello Everyone,

I hope you all are doing well and doing good things this summer! Here I am in Gainesville in my typical furor trying to prepare for our next important event, our 2011 Engineering New Student Convocation on August 19, 2011. So far, we have 1038 students listed as new freshmen, but that number should increase by the end of Preview. Because our incoming class is so large the only location for us is the O'Dome, which we will be able to have available to us for our ceremony after 12:30 p.m.

For those of you still on the journey towards your degree, I am beseeching you again to help with our New Student Convocation this year. We need many more students to organize and maintain a smooth flow before, during, and after the ceremony, which will begin at approximately 1:15 p.m. with the student processional. I will ask volunteers to arrive at 12:30 p.m. in the Martial Arts Room. Prior to this day, I will have assigned and explained in detail the role I'm asking students to perform so we that you all can arrive knowing exactly what to do!

NSBE Region III - Seeking New Leaders !!!

Hello NSBE Region III leaders,

As the largest student run organization, the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) seeks out dedicated and inspired individuals to fulfill the mission through leadership. Region 3 is looking for qualified prospects to take charge and join the NSBE Region 3 Executive Board (REB).. We are currently in need of a Programs Chairperson, Fall Regional Conference (FRC) Chairperson, Parliamentarian, Finance Chairperson, International Committee Chairperson, and Academic Excellence Chairperson. On the Regional Executive Board (REB), he or she will have the ability to impact the members on a regional level. I ask that you take time to consider stepping up on the REB and forward this announcement to anyone who may be interested. The REB will be attending a National Leadership Conference (NLC) on June 8^th – 12^th (MANDATORY attendance & all expenses paid). NSBE invests a lot into future leaders and this conference will help train you on your position as well as enlighten you with pertinent information for the year. opportunities through a series of informative, stimulating and
interactive seminars. The event will feature presentations by
accomplished fellowship recipients and experienced college advisors.
Each seminar is geared toward providing insight into the selection
criteria and application process for these competitive programs. At
the conclusion of the conference, our goal is to ensure students leave
feeling empowered, as well as armed with confidence and knowledge. We
want students excited about applying and ultimately qualify as a
candidate for these coveted fellowships and scholarships.

The inaugural Emerging Scholars Project will take place on Saturday,
July 30, 2011 at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. We
are targeting applicants entering their sophomore, junior or senior
year from schools within the Florida State University System, in addition
to students attending an accredited, four-year institution in the state.
Please assist me in passing this along to any deserving student you
know who would like to take part in this exciting program.

UF NSBE - Passing The Torch Scholarship

$500 SCHOLARSHIP!!!

Applications will be sent over the listserv and on http://www.ufnsbe.org/.

The purpose of the “Passing the TORCH” Scholarship is to recognize a UF NSBE member who has a vested interest in the organization and has shown a commitment to the NSBE mission.

ELIGIBILITY
1. Must be currently enrolled at the University of Florida and pursuing a Bachelors degree
2. Must be an active financial member of NSBE
3. Must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.25/4.0 or equivalent
4. Must be enrolled full-time at the University of Florida as a degree-seeking undergraduate for Fall 2011
5. Must have a confirmed GPA on www.nsbe.org

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
1. The Scholarship Program is open only to NSBE members with dues paid online
2. Applications must be submitted by Friday, April 15, 2011 to Margie Williams in 312 Weil by 4:00pm.
3. No application materials will be returned
4. Scholarship recipient must attend the UFNSBE End of the Year Banquet, Wednesday, April 20, 2011
